We propose joint X-ray observations of the 16 most massive SZ-detected galaxyclusters at z > 0.7 that have not yet been observed with both Chandra andXMM-Newton. Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) surveys are the most powerful and consistentmethod of detecting high mass high redshift galaxy clusters and the AtacamaCosmology Telescope (ACT) South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Planck Satellite haveused this signal to collectively discover thousands of clusters whose dynamicthermodynamic and chemical properties serve as unique probes of the compositionand growth of structure in our Universe. Leveraging the spatial resolution ofChandra with the sensitivity of XMM-Newton this joint study will effectivelydouble the number of massive clusters available for study at intermediate to high redshift.
