E. coli and colitis

Escherichia coli is a regular inhabitant of the gut microbiota throughoutlife. An expansion of Enterobacteriaceae, including E. coli, is one of the hallmarks ofdysbiosis in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), suggesting a detrimental effect of thisbacterial group. However, the role of E. coli in gut health is controversial, as somecommensal E. coli strains have been proven to be beneficial. Here, we investigated therelationship between a commensal E. coli strains and the intestine in homeostatic and disease-prone settings.
