Cyanobacteria are among the most versatile microorganisms on Earth, yet their diversity in terrestrial habitats remains largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated cyanobacteria from the Northern Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot in India. Among the isolates, we identified Egbenema bharatensis, a previously unknown species belonging to the genus Egbenema. Through whole-genome sequencing and comparative analyses, we confirmed its distinct identity, making this the first complete genome available for the genus. The genome reveals key adaptations for survival, including genes involved in nitrogen fixation, secondary metabolite production, and stress tolerance, suggesting ecological significance and potential biotechnological applications. This work not only broadens our understanding of terrestrial cyanobacteria but also provides a valuable genomic resource for future research.
