Memorializing the Enslaved in Arlington, Virginia, 1669-1865

Memorializing the Enslaved in Arlington’s (MEA) dataset contains information on 2,770 enslaved people and their 464 enslavers in Arlington County, Virginia. Using 263 primary and secondary sources, the project gathered and described, when possible, the names, vital information, genders, occupations, and place of enslavement of these individuals. Though substantive, additional research will be conducted in the future to augment this dataset. MEA is the first project devoted to researching and amassing information on Arlington’s enslaved population.
