Habitat point records from 1985 BMNH Kent & Sussex littoral chalk-cliff algal survey

Algal habitats and communities on the chalk cliff coastline of Kent and Sussex were assessed by direct observation. Summarised accounts of the main observations are presented. Due to the geological characteristics of upper chalk, habitat and algal communities are best developed on the Isle of Thanet. Communities are relatively rarely present elsewhere in Kent and Sussex. However, only 8% (less than 2 km) of the Thanet coastline remain as natural chalk cliff. Because of the unique algal vegetation, it is strongly recommended that the remaining lengths of natural chalk cliff habitat be assigned conservation status and further coastal development be strongly opposed.针对肯特郡与萨塞克斯郡白垩崖海岸线的藻类生境与群落，本研究采用直接观测法完成了评估，并呈现了主要观测结果的总结性内容。鉴于上白垩岩层的地质特性，塔尼特岛的生境与藻类群落发育最为完备，肯特郡与萨塞克斯郡其余区域的藻类群落则相对稀少。然而，塔尼特岛的海岸线中仅有8%（长度不足2千米）仍保留为天然白垩崖。鉴于该区域拥有独特的藻类植被，本研究强烈建议将剩余天然白垩崖生境纳入保护范畴，并坚决反对任何后续沿海开发活动。
