Notarial Records of Sales of Enslaved Individuals in Santiago de Chile, 1773-1821

Based on a complete review of the notarial records of Santiago de Chile, this dataset registers the transactions by which 3,800 individuals of African descent changed hands in Santiago de Chile between 1773 and 1821. It includes the names of the buyers, sellers, and enslaved persons, as well as the value of each transaction. Where possible, the dataset records the occupation of the individuals involved and, in the case of the enslaved individuals, family relationships between persons who were part of the same transaction. The dataset is valuable for establishing the significant presence of enslaved African-descended men and women in late colonial and early Republican Chile and offers possibilities for further documentary research into their lives and experiences.
