PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide improved binders， particularly binders which are i) compatible with established manufacturing processes， ii) environmentally acceptable， and iii) capable of overcoming described problems. SOLUTION: As a first aspect， a water-soluble pre-reacted binder composition comprises the reaction product of (i) at least one carbohydrate component and (ii) at least one polyamino acid component， The pre-reacted binder may be in the form of an aqueous solution or dispersion containing at least 20 wt.%， e.g.， at least 25% wt.% of the pre-reacted binder composition and/or no more than 85 wt.% of the pre-reacted binder composition. Preferred embodiments of the pre-reacted binder composition are based on an alkaline carbohydrate component/polyamino acid component binder system; i.e.， the carbohydrate component and polyamino acid component are the major reactive components of the starting materials.
