Brain imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs) can be measured noninvasively by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including the measures of the cortical surface area, thickness and volume in the distinct brain regions, and the structural connectivity of the white matter fibers. Mendelian randomization (MR) is an epidemiological method that uses genetic variants as an instrument to infer the causality between exposure factors and outcomes. We performed a two-sample MR framework to estimate causal risk factors of psychiatric disorders at the brain IDP level. We systematically screened bidirectional causal effects between 587 IDPs in 33,224 UK Biobank participants and 10 psychiatric disorders with the number of subjects ranging from 9,725 to 161,405.
