Exploring affordable Flood -resistent housing solutions in Bangladesh. A study focused on Sirajganj.

Bangladesh faces frequent flooding that damages housing and displaces millions of people each year. Conventional building materials such as mud walls, tin sheets, and bricks are often either too fragile or too costly for low-income households. This study explores affordable, sustainable, and flood-resilient housing solutions in Sirajganj, a district along the Jamuna River. Using field observations and literature review, four locally available materials—bamboo, jute sticks, recycled plastic bottles, and compressed earth blocks—were evaluated based on cost, availability, durability, and social benefits. Findings suggest that hybrid structures combining bamboo frameworks with sand-filled plastic bottle walls provide a durable, low-cost, and socially beneficial housing solution. By reusing plastic waste and strengthening community resilience, these designs not only address technical challenges but also contribute to social welfare. The study highlights the potential for pilot projects in flood-prone regions of Bangladesh and aligns with global sustainability goals on climate resilience and sustainable communities.
