The International Sheep Genomics Consortium sequenced the Ovis aries genome to 3X coverage using 454 FLX sequencing. The DNA was derived from six female sheep, each of which was sequenced to 0.5X coverage. Contigs were assembled based on alignment to the bovine genome, and contigs were ordered into ovine chromosomes using BAC-end sequences and the virtual sheep genome.
