The environmental persistence of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and limitations of conventional recycling necessitate advanced solutions. As sustainable alternatives to phthalate plasticizers, diisooctyl terephthalate (DOTP) faces growing demand yet relies on unsustainable synthesis. This critical review examines catalytic PET depolymerization routes to DOTP, analyzing homogeneous/heterogeneous systems, reaction pathways, and separation technologies. Current challenges and future research directions are evaluated to advance circular economy approaches for transforming waste PET into value-added plasticizers.
