The Rethinking Waste project, funded by the UK’s Global Challenges Research Fund, confronts the question of waste and disposability through the introduction of an experimental design and learning space, Compound 13 Lab. At the Lab, young people are placed at the centre of their own learning, to co-design and develop a bespoke ‘living curriculum’ that responds to their issues, addresses their needs and aids their future goals. The implementation of the Lab is intended to create a space of enquiry where these local knowledges and practices can be communicated within and beyond Dharavi, through a process of increasingly self-organised making and learning. Materials of Hope (2018) is a short 18-minute documentary produced collaboratively between a team of UK-based researchers and members of ACORN India. It tells the story of the journeys that waste materials make through the informal recycling industry in Dharavi, Mumbai. It was produced as part of a follow-on project for impact and engagement, Resources of Hope, funded by the AHRC through the Global Challenges Research Fund. This item contains the Materials of Hope (2018) film, along with stills from the film and a brief description of the film project. It also contains a link to the film hosted on Vimeo (see 'References' below). Film and film stills courtesy of Ben Parry, Graham Jeffery, Acorn members, and rappers from Dharavi Rocks.
