Neonatal late-onset sepsis is a devastating disease for which preterm infants are highly susceptible. Using a novel murine model of this disease, we gained insights on how dysbiosis in neonatal mice is critically important to the susceptibility of this disease. To better understand the mechanisms by which the endogenous flora offer protection or susceptible to newborn mice, we tracked colonization dynamics of the newborn mouse microbiome during the first 3 weeks of life. In other experiments, we perturbed this process using maternal perinatal antibiotic exposure and fecal transplantation from older pups.
