VPRS 3705 Commonwealth Register, Children's Court

This series consists of a single register of Convictions, Orders and other proceedings relating to Commonwealth cases heard in the Children's Court at Daylesford. There is a total of only seven cases in this register. Details recorded includes name of informant, name of the accused or defendent, summons, details of charge, remarks, and verdict. Section 77(iii) of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 vested the new Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia with the power to invest state courts with the jurisdiction to determine matters brought to court under Commonwealth legislation. Cases have been brought to these courts under Commonwealth Acts dealing with various matters including taxation, electoral matters, wireless and television licensing and conciliation and arbitration. Children's Courts were established in Victoria by the Children's Courts Act 1906. This Act came into operation on 1 December 1906. Children's Courts could sit at any place where a Court of Petty Sessions/Magistrates' Court sat. The 1906 Act and subsequent legislation required clerks of Children's Courts to keep a register of all cases and decisions of the court.
