Year and either female identity (F-ID) or male identity (M-ID) were included as random effects. SAM = Southern Annular Mode, SSTA = local sea surface temperature anomaly, SOI = Southern Oscillation Index. R2m values represent the variance explained only by fixed effects, and R2c the variance explained by both fixed and random effects. N = 366 records for female and male body mass. All compared models were based on Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML).
