We aimed to characterize the presence of ARGs within sediment bacterial communities along the Gota Alv, a typical large boreal river in Sweden, by using and comparing the two most common culture-independent methods for this purpose: qPCR and shotgun metagenomics. We also aimed to assess if WWTP discharges serve as sources of antimicrobials and ARGs into the Gota Alv, as well as to characterize and link the bacterial diversity of river sediment with its resistome. To do so, we quantified a set of six mobile and commonly found ARGs of clinical importance via qPCR in the four WWTPs and the river sediment along the Gota Alv, and we performed shotgun metagenomics, in order to obtain a broad profiling of the resistome and identify which are the most common ARGs in the Gota Alv and its associated WWTPs. The sequences in this project correspond to the metagenomic samples of the study.
