The aim of this study was to describe the microbial diversity of methane producing and metal leaching community enriched from Estonian graptolite argillite. In anaerobic process, a syntrophic consortium of heterotrophic neutrophils and methanogenic archaea degrades organometallic compounds, leaches out the metal compounds and generates methane from the remaining organic fraction. A hypothesis on metal removal and recovery by sulfidogenesis was posed.
