Molecular classification of central nervous system tumors has improved prognostication and affords a higher degree of individualized risk-modification in oncological treatment. Detailed neuropathological classification often takes weeks, while intraoperative decision-making is based of hematoxylin and eosin stained frozen tissue. We have used an inexpensive, pocket-size nanopore sequencing device combined with machine learning for rapid intraoperative classification of brain tumor biopsies based on DNA methylation profiles to allow for precise neuropathological classification.
