In a recent study (Tankéré et al., 2002), there was a question whether reduction of Fe and Mn was purely chemical or due to microbial reduction because molecular screening of water and sediments using a finger printing methods such as DGGE did not allow identification of any Fe and Mn reducers. In this study we report an enrichment culture experiment which enabled detection and identification of some putative Mn and Fe reducers in the same environment. The objective of this experiment was to enrich for microorganisms capable of coupling different carbon sources such as acetate, succinate, lactate or glycerol to Fe(III), Mn(III) or Mn(IV) reduction.
