The second phase of Great Ape Genome Project is sequencing individuals with information about their wild origins. This will allow population structure within subspecies to be investigated, which is of both academic interest and relevant to chimpanzee conservation and understanding the origins of captive animals. This part of the study will generate high-coverage whole-genome sequences of eight central chimpanzees, the most diverse subspecies.
