NRS-17812 | Plans of construction of aerodromes as part of national defence infrastructure during World War II [Department of Water and Energy]

These plans relate to work performed by the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission on construction of aerodromes as part of national defence infrastructure during World War II. Records include plans of earthworks, water supply, drainage, and other works associated with aerodromes at Bathurst, Corowa, Finley and Tocumwal c. 1940-1946.Details in the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission’s annual reports relating to this work are limited due to the War because of secrecy and the lack of resources such as paper, ink and staff time. The annual report to June 1942 briefly mentions that the State War Effort Coordination Committee made use of the Commission’s staff, draftsmen, engineers, survey parties, plant and materials for construction of defence works from October 1941 onwards. This entailed the cessation of some of the Commission’s own construction and remedial projects.(1) This work was undertaken at the direction of the State War Effort Coordination Committe on behalf of the Commonwealth Government and the Royal Australian Air Force.The report to June 1945 mentioned the Commission undertaking additional work on Tocumwal Aerodrome from August 1944 and completed in June 1945 at a cost of £111,000, and work on Bankstown Aerodrome from November 1944 and still ongoing as at 30 June 1945 with a cost to date of £98,889.
