资源简介:
The area around the Mariner Glacier was investigated to make a geological survey of the whole section, and in particular, to ascertain the relationship and contact between the sedimentary rocks known to lie in the north and east of the glacier and in the igneous rocks in the south. The expedition was in two stages. The first stage was around the head of the glacier and through the mountains on to the Victoria Plateau to Mt McCarthy and Mt Hancox areas. The second stage was to the Retreat Hills. The area was thoroughly geologised (Mt Gobey, central area of the hills, Mt Supernal, Mt Anakiwa and Onlooker Ridge). The Pleiades showed traces of granites and it was thought the contact would be somewhere between Mt Supernal in the South and the Western edge of the Mariner Glacier. The contact was found at the foot of the main northeast ridge of Mt Supernal. The stratigarphy of the volcanic rocks at the Pleiades and the schists in the Retreat Hills were described. The definition, the distribution, content, petrography, degree of metamorphism and structure, age and correlation of the Retreat Hills schists, Robertson Bay Group, Camp Ridge Quartzite, Granite Harbour Intrusive Complex, Supernal granite, McMurdo Volcanic Group (The Pleiades) rock groups were investigated and reported.
