Northam Burrows HELS archaeological survey (OASIS ID: acarchae2-167239)

An archaeological survey of Northam Burrows was prepared as part of a Higher Level Environmental Stewardship Scheme. The survey was carried out to inform future management, with particular emphasis on the control of vegetation. A total of 27 heritage assets was previously recorded within the holding, and the survey identified a further seven sites. All but two relate to the Second World War, including anti-invasion defences, training and the RAF Northam radar station. Of these 34 assets, remains of 24 were located; others had been removed during or soon after the war. Threats to these assets included coastal erosion, maintenance of the golf course, grazing and water management. Management recommendations associated with these activities have been put forward as has the potential for interpretation.
