Number of inhabited housing units in Japan 1983-2023, by building type

In 2023, Japan's inhabited housing stock comprised around 29.3 million detached houses and close to 25 million apartment units, in addition to a smaller number of tenement houses and other housing units. Japan's housing stock, including vacant dwellings, grew by more than two million compared to 2018.
