Core Based Statistical Areas

The Core Based Statistical Areas dataset was updated on September 22, 2025 from the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Census Bureau, Geography Division and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). This resource is a member of a series. The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) System (MTS). The MTS represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas are together termed Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) and are defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and consist of the county or counties or equivalent entities associated with at least one urban core of at least 10,000 population, plus adjacent counties having a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured through commuting ties with the counties containing the core. Categories of CBSAs are: Metropolitan Statistical Areas, based on urban areas of 50,000 or more population; and Micropolitan Statistical Areas, based on urban areas of at least 10,000 population but less than 50,000 population. The CBSA boundaries are those defined by OMB based on the 2020 Census and published in 2023. TIGER/Line形状文件及相关数据库文件（.dbf）为美国人口普查局主地址文件/拓扑集成地理编码与参考系统（Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing, MAF/TIGER System, MTS）中精选地理与制图信息的提取子集。MTS为无缝衔接的全国数据集，各部分之间无重叠与空白；但每个TIGER/Line形状文件均可作为独立数据集单独使用，也可组合覆盖全美范围。
大都市统计区与小都市统计区统称为核心基于统计区域（CBSAs），由美国管理和预算办公室（Office of Management and Budget, OMB）定义；其范围包含至少1个人口规模不低于10000的城市核心区所在的1个或多个县及等效地理单元，再加上与该核心区存在高度社会经济融合度的邻近县——融合度通过核心区所在县的通勤联系进行衡量。
核心基于统计区域分为两类：以人口规模不低于50000的城市区域为基础的大都市统计区，以及以人口规模介于10000（含）至50000（不含）之间的城市区域为基础的小都市统计区。
核心基于统计区域的边界由美国管理和预算办公室依据2020年人口普查结果划定，并于2023年正式发布。
