Groundwater body
A groundwater body (GWL) is as defined in the Water Framework Directive (WFD): a separate groundwater mass with an unambiguous chemical and quantitative status. The WFD has several possibilities for the way in which groundwater bodies are limited. In the Netherlands, the geological structure of the bodies of groundwater, groundwater flow and administrative boundaries is used. Due to the absence of geological barriers, the various groundwater bodies in the various sub-basins are large in size. Each GWL should be able to be allocated to a (1) river basin and per GWL it should be clear whether the objectives of the WFD can be met. Two groundwater bodies are present in Overijssel. A groundwater body with a coating (Rhine-East NLGW0010) and a sand-groundwater body without coating (Sand Rhine-East NLGW0003). The two bodies of groundwater are subject to thresholds and Community standards for groundwater quality. Standards for groundwater quantity also apply.
