Tanagra figurine in the Academic Art Museum Bonn (Inv. D813)

The terracotta figurines, possibly found in Canosa and dated to the first half of the 3rd century BC, shows a female figure standing on a low pedestal. She is wearing a chiton and a cloak, which covers almost the whole body. The right arm is bended and snatches the garment in front of the belly. The hair is dressed in melon style. The figurine consists of a front and a back side which were made of clay and from moulds. The hole is back enabled the craftsman to expire clay on the inside and to attach both sides to each other. Even though it was not find in Tanagra, it is adressed as a Tanagra figurines because the discovery of a large cemetery in the Boeotian city of Tanagra in the end of the 19th century raised the interest of archaeology and art trade although the object type was known earlier.
