In early 2017, more than half of Dutch consumers used contactless or Near Field Communication (NFC) payments at least once. The total number of registered NFC payments at retail points of sales (POS) increased in almost every quarter since 2016. Contactless payments were introduced in the Netherlands in 2014 and mainly consist of methods supported and developed by Dutch banks, as services as Apple Pay or Android Pay are not available. Apple Pay was likely to arrive in the country in the middle of 2019. Dutch contactless payments are above the European average Compared to other European countries, the Netherlands makes relatively more use of contactless payments. On average, 51 percent of all Dutch payment transactions made each month were contactless in 2018. This was higher than in the neighboring countries Belgium (four percent), Germany (14 percent) and the United Kingdom (46 percent). Towards a cashless society? In the last years, cash money was used less often for retail payment transactions. Roughly 22 million euros worth of payments were recorded in 2017. Transactions with debit cards, on the other hand, reached a value of approximately 56 million euros in the same year. This made the Netherlands one of the least likely countries in Europe where consumers pay with cash money.
