Deposition of ozone to the ocean's surface removes ozone from the atmosphere. This reaction also releases molecular iodine (I2) and hypoiodous acid (HOI), and is thought to be the largest emission source of iodine compounds into the marine boundary layer (MBL). This dataset reports iodine mixing ratios and iodine emission rates from laboratory experiments that reacted ozone with aqueous solutions containing various iodide concentrations; the results are useful for constraining models of iodine release into the MBL. Our experiments used either (i) natural samples of subsurface seawater (SSW) and the surface microlayer (SML) collected off the North Yorkshire coast, or (ii) synthetic seawater (potassium halide solutions prepared in distilled water from laboratory reagents, and buffered at pH 8). All results were obtained at 17 degrees C. Thomas Adams, Lloyd Hollis and Stephen Ball (Leicester) and Liselotte Tinel (York) performed the experiments between June and December 2018 at the School of Chemistry, University of Leicester, UK. This work was part of the NERC project "Iodide in the ocean: distribution and impact on iodine flux and ozone loss" (NE/N009444/1, PI: Dr Stephen Ball, University of Leicester, in collaboration with Prof Lucy Carpenter, University of York).
