Enhancing women’s engagement in organised physical activity: exploring the social and environmental determinants in Frankston, Victoria

Aquatic and Recreation Centres (ARCs) are popular among Australian women as venues for organised physical activity (PA); however, women’s PA continues to lag behind men’s. This research employed a mixed methods design to investigate the complex interplay of social and environmental determinants and social cognitive variables on PA through an intersectional lens, identifying factors amenable to change to enhance women’s organised PA via ARCs. Proximity to ARCs, community connection and social capital are critical enablers of ARC use for women. Overcoming identified barriers of cost of entry and insufficient car parking would further support women’s increased participation in organised PA.
