Music Zones Regional Economic Impact Index

To understand the economic and spatial dynamics of independent music venues across the United States, we began with a dataset of 1,423 venues distributed across 109 music zones, as defined by Renard and Storm (2025). From this foundation, we developed an economic output and employment contribution. To estimate the economic and employment impact of these venues, we turned to the Music Venue Economic Impact Calculator, a tool developed by Michael Seman (2022) for the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA). This calculator estimates the annual economic output and number of jobs supported by a single venue, based on inputs such as regional population, average venue capacity, and estimated annual attendance, each categorized into ranges defined by Seman. Because the calculator provides per-venue estimates, we scaled the results by multiplying them by the number of venues in each music zone. This allowed us to generate regional-level estimates of both economic impact and jobs supported. The results were striking: across all zones, independent venues contribute approximately $1.4 billion annually to the economy and support 11,824 jobs.
