Ericaceae in the central region of the Espinhaço Range, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract This study aims to contribute to the knowledge of the Ericaceae family in the central portion of the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais, by presenting data of richness, abundance, geographic distribution, and conservation status of the species. The study area includes the mountains to the north of Serra do Cipó, the Serra do Cabral, and the Diamantina Plateau, regions do not yet have published data for the family. The species survey was accomplished from queries to herbaria collections, to the literature, and in the fieldwork. 27 species of Ericaceae were reported. The flora of the area study is most similar to the Serra do Cipó, although each region presents endemisms. Among the recorded species, two are found in the Official List of Brazilian Flora Species Threatened with Extinction: Gaylussacia oleifolia Dunal and Gaylussacia setosa Kin.-Gouv. The results highlight the high wealth and endemism of the family in the study area and the urgent need for additional research in order to generate the subsidies for the elaboration of conservation strategies that are more comprehensive and effectively protect the Espinhaço biodiversity.
