Appraisal of the Archeological and Paleontological Resources of the Jamestown Reservoir North Dakota: Supplement

Archeological and paleontological investigations were conducted in the Jamestown Resevoir area, Stutsman and Foster Counties, North Dakota, by field units of the Missouri Basin Project, Smithsonian Institution, in 1946, 1947, 1952. In a five-day preliminary survey, August 27-31, 1946, J. Joseph Bauxar and Paul L. Cooper, archeologists, located seven archeological sites in the resevoir area (Bauxar, 1947). In August, 1947, Theodore E. White, paleontologist, and John C. Donohoe, assistant, found no localities of paleontological interesting the area. During the four months period, May 29 to September 26, 1952, a field party led by Richard P. Wheeler, archeologist, with Thomas H. Cain and Alan Wollworth, assistance, recorded 24 new archaeological sites in the area and tested or excavated five of the 27 sites located within the future resevoir. This report summarizes briefly the results of surveys and archeological excavations in the Jamestown Resevoir. Three relatively large sites in the reservoir area may be classified as Indian Villages, while three small sites in the reservoir area seem to have been temporary camps.
