The Building Record was on the gymnasium building constructed in c. 1937-1942, formerly part of Burton Stone Secondary Modern School of Girls (also known as Water Lane High School for Girls) and was converted into a community centre in 1980's. The gymnasium was a one storey structure constructed in red-brick and concrete with a flat roof, sun deck and chimney in Art Moderne style. Site Code: MAP 5.34.2018 National Grid Ref. SE 59783 53514 City of York Planning Ref. 18/00082/GRG3 Evelyn Crescent was part of the expansion of York, north of Clifton and west of Burton Stone Lane in the 1930's. The area was part of a social housing scheme called the Water Lane Estate, now known as Kingsway North. The Gymnasium building was constructed between 1939-1942, as part of the Water Lane High School for Girls. This was the first purpose-built school in York in response to the 1936 Education Act. The school was designed by York Architects: F.T. Penty & J.E.N. Thompson (Coney Street, York).
