The remediation of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) contaminated paddy soil has always been a complicated issue because of the differences in their chemical properties. In this study, we report a safe and effective strategy to ameliorate the toxicity of Cd-As combined pollution on rice. We found that foliar spraying of 1 μM jasmonic acid (JA) decreased the Cd concentration (34.6% and 38.3%) and As concentration (30.8% and 40.8%) in grains of Huanghuazhan and Huarun No.2. JA application increased net photosynthetic rate and the contents of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. Also, it scavenged the levels of H2O2 and O2.-, reduced lipid peroxidative damage by promoting the activities of antioxidant enzymes and changing the cellular redox status of rice flag leaves. These results demonstrated that foliar spraying of JA could be taken as an effective strategy in preventing the accumulation of Cd and As in rice grains. This research provides a reliable solution to heavy metal pollution problems in farmland which will attract readers.
