Indoorresidualspraying(IRS)involvesapplyingresidualinsecticidetopotentialvectorrestingsitesontheinteriorsurfacesofhumandwellingsorotherbuildings.ThemainaimofIRSistokillvectorsbeforetheyareabletotransmitpathogenstohumans.Whencarriedoutcorrectly,IRShashistoricallybeenshowntobeapowerfulinterventiontoreduceadultvectordensityandlongevityformosquitoes,sandfliesandtriatominebugsandcanreducethetransmissionofvector-bornediseases.Thisoperationalmanualisdesignedtoprovideguidanceontheestablishment,management,implementation,reportingandevaluationofsafeandeffectiveIRScampaignswithinthecontextofalocallyadaptedandsustainablevectorcontrolprogramme,inlinewiththeGlobalvectorcontrolresponse2017–2030.ItprovidesinformationaccordingtocurrentWHOrecommendationsandstandardsonIRSandrecognizesthatIRScanpotentiallytargetmultiplediseasesinareaswhereendophilicvectorscoexist.Thekeyaudienceforthisdocumentisvector-bornediseasecontrolprogrammemanagersandstaff,aswellasimplementingorprivate-sectorpartnersatthenational,provincial/stateorlocallevels,whoareresponsibleforthedesign,planningorimplementationofvectorcontroloperations.
