Reflecting aspects of gender inequality in the brazilian software development sector

Software development encompasses activities from conception, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. Despite efforts in the sector to include women, some limitations still persist. For a more specific view of this scenario, it is essential to reflect on aspects of gender inequality in the software development industry. We propose a study based on Equity Theory, which aims to promote equal conditions among individuals in the workplace. To this end, we conducted an Exploratory Survey with 67 professionals in this sector, followed by a quantitative analysis of these data. \destaque{The analysis revealed several key characteristics, including female under-representation, salary inequality—especially in back-end positions—barriers to entering the sector and to educational qualification, insecurity when applying for a job, the impacts of parental responsibilities, and motivations for choosing the field}. We believe that these results can motivate reflections on organizational policies that minimize gender inequalities in the software development sector and contribute to inclusive and diverse initiatives in this industry.
