LPS modification requires several enzymes, which in the process utilize or generate central metabolism intermediates. How cellular processes shift to accommodate the metabolic burden associated with LPS modification are unknown. We present evidence that the Escherichia coli transcription factor QseB controls glutamate oxoglutarate homeostasis associated with conversion of UDP 4 amino 4 deoxy b L arabinose to UDP 4 deoxy 4 formamido b L arabinose. The genomes sequenced here demonstrate modifications present in a heteroresistant daughter of the original isolation that has mutations present in glutamate oxoglutrate metabolism and supports a role for it's involvement in LPS modification.
