Geological observations and geochemistry analysis of samples of all rock outcrops from White Island, McMurdo Sound

The geology of White Island was investigated by visits to all major areas of rock outcrops. The geology was described and samples were collected for lab analysis. Xenoliths were also collected and described and a cross section of the crust and mantle that underlies White Island was deduced. Lab analysis was conducted to characterise the geochemistry of the volcanic rocks and was integrated into the petrogenetic scheme outlining the origin and evolution of the White Island magmas. This study also provided regional information relevant to the ANDRILL drill site proposed for the nearby Southern McMurdo Sound. Geochronological Ar/Ar age dating was used to constrain the timing of White Island volcanism and to compare and contrast this information with the regional characteristics of the McMurdo Volcanic Group. Geological observations were compiled into a geological map of White Island.
