Postgraduate Support at Otago: Student Questionnaire Answers

A questionnaire was developed and deployed in July 2018. It contained 20 questions and was developed in consultation with Dr Bryndl Hohmann-Marriott from the Department of Sociology, Gender and Social Work. The questionnaire was emailed to all currently enrolled Otago PhD and Masters students by the Graduate Research School (GRS). The decision to define postgraduate student as Masters or PhD when deploying the questionnaire was a practical one reached after much debate.
The questionnaire consisted of 4 sections:Section 1: 7 questions to identify Division(s), level of degree, how far through degree, part or full time study, distance or on campus, international or domestic, ethnicity.
Section 2: 3 questions to ascertain what postgraduate support is known and/or used.
Section 3: 4 questions about effectiveness of current marketing of support to postgraduate students.
Section 4: 6 questions specifically addressing Library academic support for postgraduate students.
The questionnaire was sent to 2430 postgraduate students. A total of 11 emails were not delivered bringing the number successfully sent to 2419. Qualtrics recorded a total of 564 responses (23% response rate) however only 391 completed all questions (16% response rate).
The questionnaire contained a mixture of questions to gather both qualitative and quantitative data.
The attached spreadsheet has been de-identified and tidied. Direct identifiers have been removed including all names. Most indirect identifiers have also been removed except for department and support service names.
