ThePresident’s2013Budgetprovidesnearly$1.8billionfortheNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI),asustainedinvestmentinsupportofthePresident’sprioritiesandinnovationstrategy.Cumulativelytotalingalmost$18billionsincetheinceptionoftheNNIin2001(includingthe2013request),thissupportreflectsnanotechnology’spotentialtosignificantlyimproveourfundamentalunderstandingandcontrolofmatteratthenanoscaleandtotranslatethatknowledgeintosolutionsforcriticalnationalissues.NNIresearcheffortsareguidedbytwostrategicdocumentsdevelopedbytheNanoscaleScience,Engineering,andTechnology(NSET)SubcommitteeoftheNationalScienceandTechnologyCouncil(NSTC),the2011NNIStrategicPlan(nano.gov/node/581)andthe2011NNIEnvironmental,Health,andSafetyResearchStrategy(nano.gov/node/681).ThisdocumentisasupplementtothePresident’s2013BudgetRequestsubmittedtoCongressonFebruary13,2012.Itgivesadescriptionoftheactivitiesunderwayin2011and2012andplannedfor2013bytheFederalGovernmentagenciesparticipatingintheNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI),primarilyfromaprogrammaticandbudgetaryperspective.ItisbasedontheNNIStrategicPlanreleasedinFebruary2011andreportsactualinvestmentsfor2011,estimatedinvestmentsfor2012,andrequestedinvestmentsfor2013byProgramComponentArea(PCA),ascalledforundertheprovisionsofthe21stCenturyNanotechnologyResearchandDevelopmentActof2003(PublicLaw108-153,15USC§7501).ThereportalsoaddressestherequirementforDepartmentofDefensereportingonitsnanotechnologyinvestments,per10USC§2358.
