Too high speed is very often the cause of accidents on Aachen’s roads. For this reason, the Safety and Order department regularly uses two mobile measuring devices to control the speed at special hazards. In contrast to police surveillance, urban traffic monitoring of flowing traffic is subject to strict legal requirements from § 48 of the Ordinance Authority Act, which essentially permit monitoring only at “risk points”. Due to these requirements and in close consultation with the police, the city is currently carrying out speed checks in the context of traffic accident prevention at about 130 locations in the city area.
