Ophrys sphegodes Mill., commonly known as the early-spider orchid, mimics its pollinator female pheromone, shape, and colour, to lure the male pollinator into pseudocopulation. This strategy, called sexual deception, is highly species-specific in Ophrys, thereby providing a reproductive barrier. We sequenced and assembled the genome of an individual from Gargano, South Italy. The genome size is 5.2 Gb, organised in 18 chromosomes. The genome was assembled with ONT, Illumina, and HiC data.
