Contact: kasper.coppieters@ugent.be ================================================ Dataset + Paper analysis================================================ General: The understorey light data were collected in the liana removal experiment on Gigante Peninsula, part of the Barro Colorado Nature Monument (09°07′ N, 79°51′ W), using Apogee SQ-500-SS full-spectrum quantum sensors. Reference datasets from above-canopy light were downloaded from the repository of STRI: https://doi.org/10.60635/C3GK6D The ALS data are publicly available at the repository of STRI: https://doi.org/10.60635/C3F593 Full details of the methods can be found in the publication mentioned above (once published). Datasets:The data can be found under 01_Data and consists of several folders: A folder Raw_data, which contains all the raw data used in this publication. A folder Cleaned_data, which contains all the cleaned datasets that were used for the statistical analyses. The processing scripts can be found under 1_Scripts. The statistical models that have been run can be found in 2_HPC_scripts. The FInal figures and model outputs in table form are stored in Figures and Tables, respectively. More information can be found in the enclosed ReadMe file. ================================================ Funding================================================ During the research, KC was funded by the Flemish Research Council (FWO) with grant number G002321N. MDV thanks the CML impact fund from Leiden University. During the preparation of this manuscript, FM was funded by the FWO as a senior postdoc and under an ERC runner-up project (FWO grants no. 1214723N and G0BHJ26N) and is thankful to this organisation for its financial support. The Gigante liana removal project was supported by US National Science Foundation grants DEB 08-45071, DEB 10-19436, IOS 15-58093, DEB 18-22473, and DEB 20-01799. We thank M.M. Garcia, S. Valdes, A. Valdes, B. Bernal, F. Bernal, S. Peréz, and A. Aguilar for their continuous contributions to, and censuses of, the Gigante liana removal experiment. We would like to thank STRI and NSF DEB0939907, J. Dalling, S. Hubbell and S. Dewalt, who funded acquisition of the 2009 LiDAR data, and Matteo Detto and Alfonso Zambrano, who shared the direct/diffuse light data with us. We would like to thank the STRI personnel on BCI, who made this research possible. We would also like to thank Davy Loete, Barbara D’hont and Line Van Der Sichel for their help during the fieldwork and Xinyan Cao for the help with the preprocessing of the ALS dataset. Special thanks to Pablo Narvaez and M. M. Garcia Leon for their help to keep the light sensor setup operational. The computational resources (Stevin Supercomputer Infrastructure) and services used in this work were provided by the VSC (Flemish Supercomputer Center), funded by Ghent University, FWO and the Flemish Government – department EWI.
