Oak trees are considered to be a natural habitat of both S. cerevisiae and its wild relative S. paradoxus, because they can often be isolated from oak bark. We determined whether S. paradoxus can grow on oak bark nutrients, and how it is affected by other oak microbes. We cultured a set of twelve microorganisms from oak bark and competed these against S. paradoxus in natural oak bark infusion medium. We confirmed our choice of organisms by non-culture based 454 sequencing of the fungal ITS and bacterial 16S region from whole oak bark pieces and the oak infusion.
