List of calves used for the tooth ageing study

A catalogue of 106 calf mandibles from 56 calves with a known age-at-death, used for an analysis of the timing of dental eruption and wear for calves aged between birth and 6 months of age. Only animals with known birth date and death date has been included in the analysis. Dental eruption and wear was recorded using Grant (1982) "The use of toothwear as a guide to the age of domestic ungulates", in Wilson, Grigson and Payne (eds), Ageing and sexing animal bones from archaeological sites. BAR British Series 109, pp.91-108. The analysis was carried out as part of my PhD at Lund University: "Parchment: demand and supply in medieval Scandinavia" (2026), with the intention of discerning dental data suitable for identifying calves below 6 weeks of age. This age factor comes from de La Lande (1762, Art de faire le parchemin), who states that calves used for parchment must be no more than 6 weeks old, as older calves have too thick skin.
