Number of end of life vehicles in Japan FY 2014-2023

In the fiscal year 2023, around 2.73 million vehicles in Japan entered the final phase of their life cycle before getting dismantled for recycling, becoming so-called 'end-of-life vehicles' (ELVs). It is probable the figure decreased compared to the previous year because more people decided to hold on to their vehicles during the COVID-19 pandemic. ELVs need permanent vehicle registration cancellations in advance, negatively impacting the number of motor vehicles in use. Other negative variables are temporary registration cancelations and registration cancelations for exporting.
