Case study analysis of public space configurations in Japanese rental housing and residential coexistence

This dataset is generated based on case studies of the relationship between public space configuration and residential coexistence in Japanese rental housing. Typical rental housing projects of different scales, types, and development models are selected as the objects of analysis. The process of dataset generation includes: first, screening representative cases through literature review and field surveys, covering small, medium, and large-scale rental housing projects; second, systematically organizing architectural drawings, on-site photos, and planning documents for each case; then, using graphic analysis methods to simplify the floor plans, sections, and public space node diagrams of each building, extracting key spatial configuration information, with a focus on marking the locations, boundaries, and connections of shared gardens, communal lounges, rooftop terraces, and other public spaces. The processing steps include vectorization of drawings, classification of spatial elements, overlay and annotation of public space layers. The equipment used includes digital cameras (for on-site photography) and graphic processing software (such as Adobe Illustrator).The dataset covers Japanese rental housing projects built or in operation between 1974 and 2023, with spatial information covering residential areas in major metropolitan areas such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Yokohama.
