<i>Centropogo</i><i>n</i> subgenus <i>Centropogon</i> phylogenomic dataset and code

<i>Centropogon</i> subgenus <i>Centropogon</i> (Campanulaceae) comprises 55 species found in Neotropical low-to-high elevation forests, featuring some of the most curved flowers among angiosperms. This curvature is linked to coevolution with the sicklebill hummingbird (<i>Eutoxeres</i>: Trochilidae), which pollinates most species within the subgenus. Despite their charimastic flowers, there is limited knowledge about the phylogenetic relationships among the species. To understand species relatedness in order to infer the evolution of floral traits, including curvature and inflorescence type, we conducted the first densely sampled phylogenomic analysis of the clade. Building upon a previous phylogenetic hypothesis with limited taxon sampling, we significantly expanded the dataset by doubling taxon sampling using targeted sequence capture using a lineage-specific probeset. In this analysis, we improved understanding of species relationships and compare them to previous phylogenetic studies and the current taxonomy of <i>Centropogon</i> subgenus <i>Centropogon</i>. We confirm the monophyly of the subgenus and two current sections, and identified subclades that correspond to the two paraphyletic sections. Furthermore, we explored phylogenetic dynamics of three widespread species: <i>C. granulosus</i>, <i>C. solanifolius</i>, and <i>C. cornutus</i>. In addition, we employed phylogenetic methods that account for incomplete lineage sorting and identified regions of significant species tree/gene tree discordance. Ancestral state reconstructions revealed considerable lability in the evolution of floral curvature and inflorescence type, indicating multiple putative losses of sicklebill pollination from a sicklebill pollinated ancestor. This phylogeny serves as a foundational framework for further macroevolutionary investigations into the environmental and biogeographic factors shaping the evolution of pollination-related traits.<br>
