T.cruzi Dm28c is being studied as a model system by several laboratories as a prototype for immunological, biochemical and gene expression regulation projects. The reason is that this clone differentiates very well and reproducibly in a chemically defined medium, mimicking the process that occurs within the T.cruzi invertebrate host (triatomines). Furthermore, this isolate is suitable for animal and in vitro cell culture infection allowing the isolation of all T.cruzi developmental stages.
